Fox Valley Older Adult Services (FVOAS) was established in 1972. We provide Community Care Programs, including In Home Services and Adult Day Service in DeKalb, LaSalle, Kendall, Bureau and Kane counties, with an Adult Daycare service in Sandwich.
Fox Valley Older Adult Services is a non-profit senior services agency committed to aiding and bettering the lives of the area’s older adults. Our goal is to help seniors remain in their own homes, improve and enrich vital, independent living and enhance dignity and self-respect, all while encouraging active participation in community life.
Fox Valley Older Adult Services was founded by the Board of Global Missions of the Methodist Church in 1971. The first programs included friendly visiting, shopping and trips. Volunteers went into rural LaSalle and DeKalb Counties to visit with seniors who were isolated in their own homes. They expanded to Home Delivered Meals with outreach workers interviewing participants to determine their needs.
Eventually, the program spread from Mendota to Oswego and Sandwich to Route 80, covering approximately 700 sq. miles. Senior Centers were opened across that area for potlucks, activities and a place to join others for socializing. Senior Clubs in each community provided volunteers and relayed information that benefited seniors back to their communities.
A grant for transportation was awarded in 1975 through the Title XX Community Development Block Grant. The same program and grant continues to be awarded to FVOAS today. In 1980, the FVOAS Board of Directors decided to open a permanent senior center in Sandwich. With the move to the senior center at 340 W Church in Sandwich, the service area was reduced to the Sandwich, Somonauk and Leland area because other agencies opened programs in their own counties. In 1993, FVOAS acquired the property at 1406 Suydam Rd., Sandwich because we had outgrown the center opened in 1980.
We now serve seniors in DeKalb, LaSalle, Bureau, Kendall and Kane Counties; providing programs and services ranging from In-Home Care to Adult Day Service, Transportation and Senior Nutrition in partnership with the Voluntary Action Center, Caregiver Support Groups, and a wide range of active adult programs.
